Assisi The walled town of Assisi is both stunning and miraculous. Assasi has somehow managed to retain its tranquil refuges while being a major tourism attraction. Perched halfway up Mt Subasio, and over looking Perugia, the visual impact of its shimmering white marble buildings is truly stunning. Assisi is dominated by the massive 14th century Rocca Maggiore. This hill fortress offers magnificent views over the valley and and surrounding countryside. Saint Francis (of Assasi) was born here in 1182, and work began on his basilica two years after his death in 1228. It's a magnificent tribute to the patron saint of animals, with frescoes by Cimabue, Giotto and Martini. Many Relics from Imperial days still survive including the excavated forum and the pillared facade of the Temple of Minerva. To add to the historical importance of Assisi Roman foundations are still a common feature of many buildings. Assisi, a town of great historical importance and still stepped in Roman history, is an ideal location to learn Italian.
